How Does Growing Sprouts Work?

Growing sprouts at home is easy and fast. Sprouting is the process by which seeds and legumes germinate so that you can eat them raw or cooked. The procedure enhances their nutritional value. What's more, there's no need to buy expensive gadgets to start the process. You can simply use Mason jars and sprouting lids.
Sprouts are seeds that are just beginning to grow. After you soak your seeds for several hours, the germination process starts, and the seeds transform into tiny plants. They measure around 2-5 centimeters (0.7-2 inches). The sprouts, however, require the right temperature, light, and moisture to germinate completely.
Some of the sprouts you can make in the comfort of your kitchen include sprouted beans, sprouted peas, sprouted nuts, vegetable sprouts, and seed sprouts. Before you buy any seeds, be sure to check that they are specifically meant for growing and buy them from a reputable store.

How to Sprout Mung Beans in a Jar (link):

Sprouting Equipment:
  • Mason jar
  • Sprouting lid
  • 4 tbsp mung seeds
Directions:
1. Select Your Equipment
A wide mouth Mason jar will make it much easier for you to soak, rinse and drain out water when the sprouts are ready. The jar should be large enough to accommodate the sprouting seeds. For the  sprouting lid, check out our top 10 below and see which is best for you.
2. Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse the mung seeds thoroughly to remove any stones, debris, and other bits that are not seed material. Use cold water of about 70 degrees F (21 degrees C) which you will drain when you are done with the rinsing.
3. Soak Overnight
Place 4 tbsp of the rinsed mung seeds at the bottom of the jar. Fill the jar until it's about 3/4 full. Secure with the lid. Soak the seeds for around 8 hours at room temperature.
4. Drain The Seeds
This stage is when the importance of the sprouting lid comes in. Drain the water from the jar and rinse with fresh water and drain.
5. Continue To Rinse The Seeds
Rinse again. Let freshwater into the pot and keep rinsing. To speed up the process, rinse 3 to 4 times every day.
This process may take about 2-3 days. Be gentle as you drain and rinse so that you do not damage the budding sprouts. To ensure all the water drains out quickly, you can invert the jar.
6. The Last Harvest Rinse
Mung seeds take about 3 to 4 days to sprout fully. When ready to harvest, do the final rinse. Be sure not to leave the seeds out for too long since the leaves may start growing. Wash them adequately with fresh water and drain.
Remove the Mason sprouting lid from the jar and place the seeds in a bowl. Take out the mung seeds that have not sprouted. Store the sprouts in the refrigerator. They should stay fresh for around a week.

Considerations Before Buying

Safety and Durability

Safety is essential when sprouting. Choose a material that is rust-proof, non-toxic, and durable. Stainless steel and plastic options are the most convenient for longer use.

Great Drainage and Airflow

Another critical feature to look at when choosing sprouting lids is the drainage. Choose one that adjusts perfectly to your jar such that it facilitates foolproof air circulation as well as easy rinsing which are both essential for the adequate growth of sprouts. Proper drainage keeps your homemade sprouts in the best condition.

Simple and Easy to Clean

Select lids that are simple to use and can be easily cleaned. Go for a lid that you can quickly boil and is safe to use in your dishwasher.

Wide Range

Multipurpose sprouting lids will enable you to grow a wide variety of sprouts. Buy ones that can have options to sprout larger sprouts such as bean sprouts and broccoli sprouts and even tiny sprouts.

Lid Size and the Hole Size

Get a size that's large enough to suit your wide mouth Mason jars. The lid should fit perfectly such that there is no leakage of seeds. Also, ensure that the gadget has enhanced hole sizes to facilitate the growth of most kinds of sprouts.
